Top Tips for Keeping Pets Cool in Hot Weather

Now the weather is getting warmer, you may have started to think about your furry friends overheating. In this guide we will explore some tips on how to keep your pets cool and safe so you can enjoy the summer stress-free and maintain their health.

Key Indicators of Overheating in Pets

So how do you tell when your pet is struggling in harsh weather? Some things to look out for are:

  • Heavy panting or rapid, excessive or distressed breathing
  • Excessive thirst
  • Glazed eyes
  • Vomiting
  • Bright or dark red tongue and gums
  • Staggering and stumbling
  • Weakness and collapse
  • Increased pulse and heartbeat
  • Excessive drooling
  • Seizures
  • Lethargy
  • Agitation, restlessness and pacing

Upon noticing your pet showing signs of overheating, it is imperative that you move them to a shaded and cool area immediately and pour cool tap water, preferably at about 15-16 degrees, over your four-legged friend.

Continuous Airflow

Here at the Three Sirens we recommend having continuous airflow on particularly humid days to give your pets some breeze. Attaching our Extra Tall Dog Safety Gate Automatic Closing White to your back door only takes 5 minutes and will keep dogs of all sizes inside (and even your cats too) thanks to its 104cm height. We recommend putting up a pet gate because, if you have indoor pets or an unsecure garden, it keeps them safe from running away too.

Cooling Mats

Is resting on the cold kitchen floor not meeting your pets' comfort needs? Using our Pet Cool Mat for your pet will give them immediate relief from the heat. Cooling mats are portable so they can be used at home, in their bed, the car or travel crate. When a dog settles onto the cooling mat, the gel reacts to their body heat and pressure, absorbing the warmth. This process gradually cools the mat, transforming it into a more comfortable resting spot for your furry companion. They are ideal for hot days or after strenuous play sessions. Our pet cooling mats are easily cleaned - you just need some warm soapy water and a rinse.

Cold Water

Using cold water is the oldest trick in the book to stay refreshed on a hot day. Keep your Stainless Steel Pet Bowls full with cold water throughout the day for your pets so they can have constant access to fresh cool water. Staying hydrated in high heat is important for pets as well as people!
We also recommend filling up a Pet Paddling Pool with cool water and even getting out our ‘Water Hose Auto Retract 10m’ and giving your dog a spray with the gentle mist as a fun, enriching and stimulating activity for your dog that will not contribute to them overheating.

With these tips, you and your pets can enjoy a stress-free and refreshing summer. Prioritising their well-being ensures that the sunny season remains enjoyable for everyone in your household. Stay cool and have a wonderful summer with your beloved pets!
